BRIEF: Cubs outright Gonzalez Germen

Feb. 13--Gonzalez Germen's eventful offseason took on another twist when the Chicago Cubs announced Friday that he had cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Gonzalez, 27, did receive an invitation to major league spring training as a non-roster player. The Cubs' spring training roster stands at 60.

Gonzalez posted a 4.75 ERA in 25 games with the New York Mets last season. But his offseason began to spin when he was acquired by the New York Yankees for cash considerations on Dec. 19 -- four days after the Mets designated him for assignment.

But 3-1/2 weeks later, the Yankees designated Germen for assignment. The Texas Rangers acquired him for cash considerations on Jan. 21, only to designate him for assignment the next day to make room for catcher Carlos Corporan.

The Cubs claimed Germen off waivers on Jan. 23 but designated him for assignment on Feb. 4 after claiming left-hander Drake Britton off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
