BRIEF: Cubs manager Joe Maddon's umpire criticism gets MLB's attention

May 07--ST. LOUIS -- Major League Baseball is investigating harsh comments by Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon that were directed at home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn during the game Wednesday night against the Cardinals.

Maddon was critical of Reyburn's strike zone -- particularly toward the Cubs' younger players -- during the Cubs' 6-5 victory.

"I had enough," Maddon said after the game. "The whole game it was egregiously bad. You cannot permit that to happen.

"We're trying to ascend. And we're not going to take that from anybody, anywhere at any time. You play a veteran club with a veteran battery and you got guys that barely have a month in the big leagues. I'm not going to take it. Our guys deserve equal treatment."

Maddon was ejected by Reyburn in the top of the sixth inning.

As of Thursday morning, Maddon said he had yet to hear from MLB officials.

"No, not yet," Maddon said. "I'm sure I will. Maybe I will. I'm not sure. I said what I had to say, and that's it.''
