BRIEF: Cubs make instant splash in international market

July 02--The Chicago Cubs apparently have backed up their mission to be aggressive during the first day of the international signing period.

According to MLB.com, the Cubs agreed to terms with Yonathan Sierra Estiwal to a $2.5 million bonus. Estiwal is a 16-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder from the Dominican Republic.

The Cubs also agreed to terms with infielder Aramis Adelman of the Dominican Republic to a $2 million contract, shortstop Yonathan Perlaza of Venezuela ($1.3 million), catcher Miguel Amaya of Venezuela (1.25 million), third baseman Christopher Martinez ($1 million) and pitcher Yunior Perez from the Dominican ($600,000), according to MLB.com and Baseball America.

The team cannot announce the signings until the players have passed physical examinations and their paperwork has been approved.
