BRIEF: Cubs' Jake Arrieta wins NL Player of Week honors

Aug. 31--The awards are starting to roll in for Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta.

Less than 24 hours after pitching a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium, Arrieta was named the National League player of the week.

Arrieta pitched a 2-0 no-hitter Sunday over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arrieta, who struck out 12 and walked one, finished the month of August with a 6-0 record and 0.43 ERA in six starts. Elias reports that Arrieta is the first pitcher to post a 6-0 record in six starts with an ERA below 0.75 since Jim Kaat of the White Sox went 6-0 with a 0.35 ERA in September of 1974.

Edwin Encarnacion of Toronto was named the American League player of the week for the period endng Sunday after hitting .391 with six home runs and 17 RBIs.
