Thursday's recap: Cubs 6, Mets 1

July 03--The summary

Jonathan Herrera, starting in place of rookie Kris Bryant at third base, equaled his career high with three RBIs to support Jake Arrieta as the Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the Mets with a 6-1 victory Thursday in New York.

At the plate

Starlin Castro, batting leadoff for the first time since 2013, had two hits and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth. Herrera hit a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom in the sixth -- his first homer since July 7, 2013. Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

On the mound

Arrieta allowed doubles to deGrom and Curtis Granderson in the third that snapped the Cubs' streak of 25 scoreless innings. But Arrieta lowered his career ERA against the Mets to 0.97 with eight innings of one-run ball.

In the field

The Cubs didn't record a flyout until Ruben Tejada's fly to right fielder Chris Denorfia for the second out of the eighth.

Key number

7-0 -- The Cubs' seven-game sweep of the Mets is their first season-series sweep of seven games or more since 1885, according to Elias Sports.

The quote

"I never doubted the resolve of our guys. We just had a tough time in St. Louis." -- manager Joe Maddon
