April 21--PITTSBURGH -- Play between the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates stopped in the top of the second inning for 23 minutes Monday night after a fan was injured behind home plate.
As the fan walked to her seat in the front row while carrying items from the concession stand, the Cubs' Starlin Castro fouled off an 0-1 pitch. The ball hit the backstop screen before penetrating and hitting the fan in the back of the head.
Play stopped immediately after the fan fell immediately to the ground in the front row. Pirates starter A.J. Burnett threw a few warm-up pitches before leaving the field.
The fans was eventually removed from the area on a stretcher.
When play resumed, Starlin Castro hit a single on the next pitch.
The start of the game was delayed by 28 minutes because of rain.
