BRIEF: Cubs Game Day: Cubs win 6-3 behind 14-hit attack

June 08--Cubs 6, Nationals 3

The summary: The Cubs used a 14-hit attack Sunday, sparked by the return of Chris Denorfia, to roll to a 6-3 win over the Nationals. Denorfia and Chris Bryant had three hits, and Chris Coghlan hit a two-run single in the fifth to put the Cubs ahead for good.

At the plate: Anthony Rizzo extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games with an infield hit in the fifth, and he sparked a two-run sixth with a double.

On the mound: Embattled closer Hector Rondon started the eighth and retired all three batters. Jason Motte pitched the ninth to earn his first save since Oct. 3, 2012, with St. Louis.

In the field: Shortstop Starlin Castro botched a grounder that preceded Ian Desmond's home run in the second.

Key number: 13 -- Errors committed by Castro this season.

The quote: "In the ninth inning, you're more than likely going to see (Hector) Rondon. Absolutely. But then again, I want to see how we get to that particular moment, too. It's also at the point where I wouldn't be afraid to bring him in the eighth, even for four outs, if that was something just to get him some work and his confidence going." -- Maddon
