Jake Arrieta was tagged for nine hits in only 51/3 innings Thursday as the Cubs lost to the Cardinals 5-1, dropping three of four at Busch Stadium. John Lackey limited the Cubs to two hits through the first six innings and they didn't advance a runner past first base through the first five.
At the plate
Kris Bryant moved to the second spot and drew a walk in the first inning but struck out three times. Addison Russell singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
On the mound
Reliever Justin Grimm showed his right elbow is fine when he snapped off a breaking pitch to strike out Peter Bourjos, but he threw a wild pitch in the next at-bat to Lackey that scored the Cardinals' fifth run.
In the field
Shortstop Starlin Castro ranged far to his right, but his throw sailed wide of first base for a throwing error that set up the first of two runs for the Cardinals in the second inning.
