April 29--Manager Joe Maddon was unaware that the Chicago Cubs are assured of their first winning record in April since 2008, when they won their last National League Central title.
The Cubs, who play the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night at chilly Wrigley Field, assured themselves of a winning April by winning three consecutive games to post an 11-7 record.
But Maddon isn't content with an impressive start.
"My big thing is that we're trying to win every month," said Maddon, who sends Travis Wood to the mound against Jeff Locke in a battle of left-handers. "To win every month would be part of the goals. Try to win the day, try to win the week, try to win the month. And at the end of the season, it looks pretty good normally."
Maddon added that Chris Denorfia's hamstring isn't 100 percent, which is part of the reason why Junior Lake is starting in left field.
