BRIEF: Sunday's recap: Cubs 8, Twins 0

June 22--The summary

Behind the shutout pitching of Jake Arrieta and a six-run eighth inning, the Cubs pulled away to an 8-0 victory Sunday over the Twins. Arrieta retired 12 consecutive batters, Anthony Rizzo hit a 422-foot home run in the fifth and Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam in the eighth.

At the plate

Before he was optioned after the game to Triple-A Iowa, Kyle Schwarber left a favorable impression with a two-run single on an 0-2 curve off left-hander Aaron Thompson in the eighth.

On the mound

No batters advanced past first base after the third against Arrieta, who struck out four straight. He fooled Eduardo Nunez on a 96 mph fastball to end the seventh.

In the field

Second baseman Addison Russell ranged to his right to take a hit away from Eddie Rosario and turn it into a double play in the first.

Key number

2 -- Career shutouts by Arrieta.

The quote

"(Arrieta) stole the show.. It's fun to play behind him when he's got all his stuff going. He grinded through the first and settled in. It was sit back and enjoy the show." -- Rizzo
