BRIEF: Cubs claim pitcher Drake Britton off waivers

Feb. 04--The Chicago Cubs claimed left-handed pitcher Drake Britton off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

Britton, 25, was 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA, 21 strikeouts and nine walks over 27 2/3 innings pitched in 25 relief appearances with the Red Sox over the last two seasons. He made 45 relief appearances with the Red Sox Triple-A club in 2014, going 2-3 with a 5.86 ERA.

The Cubs designated right-handed reliever Gonzalez Germen for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Britton. They had claimed Germen off waivers from the Texas Rangers in late January.
