BRIEF: Cubs acquire left-hander Rex Brothers from Rockies

Nov. 25--The Chicago Cubs continued to add relievers Wednesday by acquiring left-hander Rex Brothers from the Rockies in exchange for minor league reliever Wander Cabrera.

Brothers, 27, is 16-11 with a 3.42 ERA in 286 major league relief appearances covering the past five seasons. Brothers has struck out 278 batters in 242 1/3 innings while limited opponents to a .243 batting average -- including a .224 mark to left-handed hitters.

Cabrera, 18, was 4-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 14 appearances with the Cubs' Dominican Summer League team.

Brothers, the 34th overall pick in the 2009 draft, has allowed only 21 home runs and posted a sub-3.00 ERA in three of his five major league seasons.

Brothers is a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., the same hometown as marquee free agent left-hander David Price.

In the past week, the Cubs have added Audury Acevedo, Jack Leathersich, Spencer Patton and Brothers to their bullpen. They also claimed Ryan Cook on waivers earlier this month.
