BRIEF: Crews find no one in lake after report of swimmer off Uptown

Nov. 25--Emergency crews searched Lake Michigan off Uptown for a person reported to be trying to swim in the frigid water midday Wednesday but found no one.

Fire Department and Police Marine Unit divers searching for a person off Foster Avenue after a call came in about someone in the water about 11:55 a.m., but ended their search a little before 1 p.m. without finding anyone, authorities said.

Authorities were called after someone called in to say they saw a person swimming off Foster Avenue, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. When police located the person who had called in the report, the witness admitted they hadn't seen anyone enter the water, but had seen someone appear to get ready to get into the lake, authorities said.

The water temperature of Lake Michigan off the Chicago shoreline was 46 degrees Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
