Jan. 22--Chicago Public Schools has announced when it will make up two days of classes that were canceled earlier this month because of cold weather.
The makeup days will be Friday, Jan. 30, and Wednesday, June 17, a school district spokesman said. Those dates were originally scheduled as teacher training and school improvement days.
June 17 is one day after what was scheduled to be the end of the district's fourth quarter, meaning students' summer vacation will be delayed because of wintry weather.
CPS and dozens of other area districts closed their doors early this month amid frigid temperatures.
Schools officials have said closing school for low temperatures has become a "new normal," for some districts, though the practice has raised questions about long-term implications for the school calendar.
CPS has no formal policy on closing schools due to inclement weather, though spokesman Bill McCaffrey has said the district considers factors including temperatures, wind speeds, snow accumulation and the ability of students to safely travel to and from school when making a decision.
