BRIEF: Court hears Joliet reporter's appeal of penalty for not revealing source

Dec. 04--The Chicago Tribune Media Group's Southtown Star is reporting that an Illinois court heard arguments in an appeal by a Joliet reporter who was found in contempt of court in 2013 for refusing to give the name of his source in a double murder case.

Joseph Hosey, a reporter for Patch, provided details from police reports in a story about the January 2013 slayings of Joliet residents Eric Glover and Terrance Rankins. Lawyers for Bethany McKee, one of the defendants, argued that the stories violated her right to a fair trial.

Will County Circuit Judge Gerald Kinney ordered Hosey to name the provider of the reports, but Hosey refused. Hosey was fined and could face jail time pending the appeal.
