BRIEF: Cops: Possible grenades found in scrap metal on South Side

Jan. 28--Police were on the scene investigating a report from a man who said he found two grenades when unloading scrap metal in the city's Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

Shortly before noon, the man was unloading scrap metal from his vehicle in the 600 block of West 59th Street when he saw what appeared to be two grenades, said Chicago Police Department spokesman Jose Estrada, citing preliminary information.

The Chicago Fire Department and the police bomb and arson unit are on the scene, Estrada said.

Police had cordoned off Wallace Street to Lowe Avenue at 59th Street earlier Tuesday afternoon, but as of 4:25 p.m., the area was reopened for traffic.

As of 4 p.m., police had no details available on the status of the grenades.
