BRIEF: Police: Statement mistakenly said man charged with Rogers Park shooting

Jan. 26--The Chicago Police Department said Tuesday it sent out a release this week erroneously saying a Rogers Park man had been charged with shooting a woman.

In the release issued Monday evening, the department said the 24-year-old man had been charged with aggravated battery after the victim identified him. The release included the man's name and picture.

But Officer Nicole Trainor, a police spokeswoman, said Tuesday charges were not approved against the man and the release should not have been sent out.

The shooting happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of North Greenview Avenue, police said. A woman told police she dropped her purse while walking down an alley and heard shots when she bent down to pick it up.

The woman was hit six times by gunfire and was taken by a friend to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was initially listed in serious condition, according to police.
