BRIEF: Cops: Charges filed in robbery of elderly woman in Lakeview elevator

April 08--A 61-year-old man has been charged with dragging a 75-year-old woman from her wheelchair and robbing her last weekend on a North Side elevator.

Darren Berlin, 61, of the 7500 block of South Luella Avenue, was charged with one felony count robbery of a victim handicapped or over the age of 60, according to police.

Berlin was also charged with criminal damage to property, criminal trespass to a vehicle and theft, all of which are misdemeanors.

The robbery happened about 8:55 a.m. March 27 at a residential building in the 3600 block of North Pine Grove Avenue in the Lakeview East neighborhood. The robber pushed a senior citizen to the ground and took the victim's property, police said.

Berlin also was wanted on a parole violation.

He was identified as the person who confronted the 75-year-old woman in an elevator, grabbed her and threw her from her wheelchair onto the elevator floor, police said.

Berlin then allegedly rummaged through the storage compartment of the victim's wheelchair before fleeing with her belongings, police said.

Berlin has a lengthy history of using aliases, including Larry C. Tolliver.
