May 23--A 25-year-old Bronzeville neighborhood man was ordered held without bond Saturday after being accused of fatally shooting another man in April, police said.
Romell V. Outlaw, of the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard, was charged with murder and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. He was ordered held with no bond Saturday afternoon at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Outlaw was identified as the man who fatally shot 37-year-old Juan Simpson in the back in the 100 block of East 69th Street in the city's Park Manor neighborhood about 8:25 p.m. April 2, police said.
According to prosecutors Saturday, Outlaw entered the Fair Food Mart on the corner of 69th Street and Indiana Avenue. According to video recordings taken inside the store, a witness spoke to Outlaw's girlfriend, causing them to get into an argument.
Outlaw left the store with the girlfriend and crossed the street, with no one following. The defendant then pulled out a gun and shot at a group outside the store, hitting the victim, prosecutors said.
Outlaw was identified by a witness in a lineup and also by a store employee, prosecutors said.
Simpson, of the 6900 block of South Indiana Avenue. was transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County,where he was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m. the same night, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
An autopsy determined Simpson died of a gunshot wound and the medical examiner's office classified Simpson's death as a homicide.
Outlaw was arrested Friday, police said.
