May 10--A 3-year old girl was hospitalized Friday after her 6-year old brother accidentally shot her while they sat together in their father's car outside a day care center, Gary police said.
The incident happened at about 4 p.m., outside the day care center in the 1000 block of Tyler Street, said Gary police spokesman Thomas Decanter.
The two children were in the car while their father was in the day care, police said. The boy found the gun and it accidentally went off, hitting the girl in the left hand, police said.
The girl was initially taken to Methodist Hospital, Northlake Campus, in Gary, where it was determined she needed further treatment so she was taken to a hospital in Chicago. Police could not immediately say which one.
The case remains under investigation, Decanter said.
