BRIEF: Common, Ice Cube lead Chicago panel on violence for VH1 special

March 28--Rappers-turned-actors Common and Ice Cube were among the stars who took part in a discussion about gun violence this month on the South Side ahead of the release of their upcoming movie "Barbershop: The Next Cut.

College students and grassroots organizers discussed challenges of living in the city at the town hall, which was held March 14 at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The conversation will be featured in a VH1 special scheduled to air 9 p.m. April 11.

Hip-hop artist Vic Mensa, "Black Ink Crew: Chicago" star Ryan Henry, former Fenger High School principal Liz Dozier and some of the "Barbershop" stars are also slated to appear in the episode.

The special is the inaugural episode of VH1's new "Behind The..." series, hosted by Sway Calloway, that explores the intersection of pop culture and political issues.

"Barbershop: The Next Cut," which touches on Chicago gun violence, is set to hit theaters April 15.
