BRIEF: ComEd: Damaged lines may have caused downtown outage

April 16--Commonwealth Edison says damaged power lines may have caused an outage in downtown Chicago that affected as many as 1,600 customers and trapped a woman inside an elevator.

The outage was reported around 11 p.m. Wednesday in an area bounded by Michigan Avenue east to Lake Shore Drive, and from Wacker Drive to Monroe Street, according to ComEd.

The outage affected a total of nine buildings, including three high-rise residential buildings, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

One woman was trapped inside an elevator in one of the high-rises, but firefighters were able to rescue her without injury, Langford said. No other problems were reported.

Power was restored by 3 a.m. ComEd said it was investigating whether damaged power lines caused the outage, but did not give more details.
