BRIEF: CNA to leave Chicago's iconic 'Big Red' skyscraper

Dec. 16--After 43 years in the iconic red skyscraper painted in its corporate color, CNA is ditching 333 S. Wabash Ave. and moving half a mile northwest.

And the insurance giant is taking its name with it.

It will rename 151 N. Franklin St. -- the 35-story skyscraper it expects to move to in summer 2018 as anchor tenant -- the CNA Center, a name that until now belonged to its Wabash address.

CNA's current home has for decades been one of the most eye-catching skyscrapers in the city, thanks to a red finish that makes it jump out amid a sea of more somber black, concrete and glass high-rises. Workers informally dubbed it "Big Red."

It will be sold to The John Buck Co., the developer behind 151 N. Franklin, CNA said. The firm will lease its current space from John Buck until its new home is completed, it said.

Remaining tenants at 333 S. Wabash include the Chicago Housing Authority and United Way.
