Aug. 27--Clayton Thorson, a redshirt freshman, will be Northwestern's starting quarterback when the Wildcats host Stanford on Sept. 5, head coach Pat Fitzgerald announced Thursday.
Thorson spoke after Wednesday's practice in Evanston about the challenges of the position as Northwestern strives to improve on back-to-back 5-7 seasons.
"As a quarterback unit I feel like we've gotten a lot better," said Thorson, the 6-4, 220-pounder from Wheaton North. "Obviously game-planning for Stanford, I think we are all starting to understand that. I think we are coming together at the right time. We understand Stanford is a really good team. It's nice to know you are playing for something."
Thorson beat out Matt Alviti and Zack Oliver for the starting job.
