Clayton F. Brown's Wheaton house listed for $1.75 million

Nov. 18--A four-bedroom, 5,933-square-foot house on close to 2 acres in Wheaton has been listed for $1.75 million.

The Colonial-style house was built in 1985 for Clayton F. Brown, who ran his namesake investment banking and bond trading firm, Clayton Brown Associates, until selling the firm to Dain Bosworth Inc. in 1994.

Brown, 87, recently listed the home, which overlooks a private natural pond. The house was built by Airhart Construction.

Features in the home include 5 1/2 baths, extensive millwork, three fireplaces, 10-foot ceilings, a first-floor master suite with a private paneled library, a four-season sunroom with a vaulted ceiling, a 33-foot-long family room with a coffered ceiling, a new roof and an attached 3.5-car garage. Outside on the 1.95-acre property are an in-ground pool, gardens and a new bluestone patio.

Patrick Turley of Keller Williams, who has the listing, said the property's walk-to-town location and acreage give it an estate feel. At the same time, he acknowledged that the house's interior needs updating.

"It has fallen to put it nicely behind the fashion curve, but I think anybody that can afford to live there is going to come in and expect to have to redo the kitchens and baths. The structure is outstanding," he said.
