Jan. 08--Officials worked to repair a water main break, originally believed to be a sinkhole, on the South Side Wednesday evening.
City crews responded to the water main break around 9:40 p.m. in the 8700 block of South Union Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood, said Chicago Police News Affairs Office Hector Alfaro.
Preliminary reports said a vehicle fell into a large sinkhole in that, but that information turned out to be incorrect, police said.
City officials worked to fix a leak in a defective valve, and no vehicle was found on the scene, said Chicago Department of Water Management spokesman Gary Litherland. He confirmed that there was no sinkhole in the area.
"We knew about the leak," Litherland said. "And we repaired it."
No injuries were reported, and the city's Streets and Sanitation Department was notified of the incident.
