BRIEF: City Winery could sell its bottles on Riverwalk

Sept. 17--The new Riverwalk: good for running, biking and soon maybe buying wine to take home.

An ordinance endorsed Wednesday by the Chicago City Council's license committee would allow City Winery Chicago at the Riverwalk to sell its in-house-produced bottles of wine.

The wine could only be sold 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Consumers would not be allowed to have open wine bottles on the Riverwalk -- the purchases are for off-site consumption only, according to the proposal. The bottles will be standard -- 750 ml at most -- so no magnums. Corkscrews will not be sold with the bottles. And only wine made and bottled at City Winery would be sold.

The measure is expected to be considered by the City Council next week.

Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, and representatives for City Winery could not immediately be reached for comment.

Hal Dardick contributed.
