July 12--Starting pitcher Jake Arrieta threw a complete game -- and hit a solo home run -- as the Cubs beat the White Sox 3-1 on Sunday to avoid a sweep at Wrigley Field.
Arrieta is the first Cubs pitcher to reach 10 wins by the All-Star break since 2008, when Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano both reached that number.
The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple by Kris Bryant and a run-scoring single by Jorge Soler.
Arrieta hit his first career homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0. The homer into the left-field bleachers came on an 0-2 count.
The White Sox scored a run in the sixth when Carlos Sanchez scored from third on a one-out bunt by Adam Eaton.
Quintana lasted 7 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits while fanning nine.
Neither team provided much offensive fireworks in the first two games, with the White Sox winning 5-1 on Saturday (one of those runs was unearned). The Cubs scored a total of one run in the first two games of the series.
Since June 23, the Cubs have averaged 2.4 runs a game and batted .212 as a team (123-for-580).
Before the game, the Cubs activated catcher David Ross from the 7-day concussion disabled list and optioned outfielder Mike Baxter to Triple A Iowa.
The Cubs are wearing No. 14 throwback jersey uniforms from 1958 to honor Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, who died in January.
