BRIEF: Cirque's 'Avatar'-themed 'Toruk' coming to Chicago

Oct. 26--"Toruk -- The First Flight," a major "Avatar"-themed new Cirque du Soleil attraction created in tandem with movie creator James Cameron and 20th Century Fox, is coming to Chicago, the Canadian entertainment company announced Monday.

The Chicago run will be at the United Center next summer, with performances slated from Aug. 3-7, 2016. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Nov. 6.

Written and directed by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, "Toruk -- The First Flight" is setting out on a global tour of arenas in 2016. The show, which imagines a world thousands of years before the events that take place in Cameron's "Avatar" movie, will have its world premiere in December in Montreal.

In an interview with the Tribune last summer, Cirque president Daniel Lamarre said that the production, which comes closer to melding film, technology and live entertainment than anything Cirque has done before, will be one of the biggest shows in Cirque history.
