BRIEF: Chris Copeland apologizes for 'bad choice' after getting stabbed

April 09--Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland issued an apology Thursday after being stabbed early Wednesday morning outside a New York City nightclub and needing surgery on his abdomen and left elbow.

"I also want to apologize to everyone, particularly the NBA and the Pacers for my bad choice at being out at that time," Copeland said in a statement, after thanking everyone for their prayers and support.

"I am doing as well as can be expected and I will work hard to make a full recovery."

The Pacers said in a statement that Copeland was in stable condition after surgery but there was no timetable as to how long he would remain hospitalized.

Authorities told the Associated Press that Copeland and Katrine Saltara were hospitalized with minor injuries and a second woman, Catherine Somani, also suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Police said Copeland and Saltara were arguing on the street outside the nightclub around 4 a.m. when the alleged attacker tried to interfere. The suspect then took out a knife and started to slash people in the group, police said.

A 22-year-old suspect is said to be in custody.

Times staff writer Austin Knoblauch contributed to this report.
