CHP officer patrolling near San Francisco's 'Super Bowl City' is stabbed, authorities say

Feb. 02--A California Highway Patrol officer was slashed in the neck Tuesday morning by a man walking near an on-ramp of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, officials said.

The seven-year CHP veteran and his partner responded to a report of a pedestrian on the freeway near 4th and Bryant streets when they saw a man walking up a bridge on-ramp and asked him to return, said Officer Vu Williams of the CHP's San Francisco office. After walking toward them, the man pulled out a knife, slashed the officer's throat and ran away, he said.

The officer was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening wounds. Williams said the officer's condition appeared to be improving.

San Francisco police arrested the attacker a few blocks away. His identity was not immediately released.

Streets in the area, including highway ramps, were closed as police and the CHP investigated the scene.
