Jan. 05--Most workers making Monday's miserably cold commute could at least look forward to shedding their puffy coats once inside the heated sanctuary of their offices. Not so for some downtown OfficeMax employees.
While outside temperatures hovered around 5 degrees, the thermostat inside OfficeMax at 550 N. St. Clair St. registered a chilly 54.5 degrees Monday afternoon. Several employees wore their winter coats and hats as they manned the registers.
An OfficeMax spokeswoman said the heat trouble "involves an issue with the building," not just the store, and the company is "working to resolve it as soon as possible."
"We will continue to monitor the store temperature during this winter weather to ensure the safety of our associates and customers," she added.
OfficeMax was based in Naperville until it merged last year with Office Depot, based in Boca Raton, Fla., where the combined office supplies company is now headquartered.
For the record, the high in Boca Raton Monday was 82.
