BRIEF: Children's Memorial Hospital site to be redeveloped by new partnership

June 01--Demolition of the former Children's Memorial Hospital site in Chicago's Lincoln Park, the first step in a redevelopment that will add 600 residences to the neighborhood, is to begin by year's end, developers said Monday.

McCaffery Interests, the original developer, announced Monday that it had formed a partnership with Hines to tackle the 6-acre site at Halsted Street and Fullerton and Lincoln avenues.

The project will include 540 luxury apartment units in two towers, up to 60 low-rise condominium units, about 160,000 square feet of retail and outdoor space that will include gardens, a fountain and a children's play area. The sale of the land has not been completed, nor has construction financing been secured.

The project, to be completed in 2018, was designed by Antunovich Associates with Skidmore, Owings Merrill.

The property has been empty for three years, since the hospital moved to the Streeterville neighborhood and was renamed Ann Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
