BRIEF: Child hit, killed by light rail train in San Francisco

May 12--A boy was killed Tuesday morning by a light rail train in San Francisco, police said.

The boy was hit before 9 a.m. when he was in front of the San Francisco Municipal Railway train at San Jose and Lakeview avenues south of downtown, an agency spokesman said.

The boy was either 11 or 12 years old, officials said. He was hit by the M train, which had to turn around after the crash, officials said.

Photos of the scene showed a yellow tarp covering up the boy's body in a marked crosswalk. A witness told CBS San Francisco that the boy had a backpack on and had run around an SUV and in front of the train, which was already moving. The boy's mother was nearby when he was hit, the station reported.

"Oh, she was hysterical," witness Jay Hader told CBS. "She was trying to move the train. She was trying to pull the kid from under the train. She just lost it. And we're trying to get somebody to get here. They got here about 10 minutes after the whole thing happened."
