BRIEF: Chicago theaters receive large grant for audience-building

April 15--The Goodman Theatre, Lyric Opera, Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Victory Gardens Theater are among twenty-six national recipients sharing a single $52 million dollar grant, it was announced on Wednesday.

The grant, given by the Wallace Foundation, is to be used for experiments in audience-building.

Those four Chicago institutions join 22 others nationally: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, ASU Gammage, Ballet Austin, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Cal Performances Berkeley, Contemporary Arts Center, Denver Center Theatre Company, La Jolla Playhouse, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Oakland East Bay Symphony, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pasadena Playhouse, Portland Center Stage, San Francisco Performances, Seattle Opera, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, University Musical Society, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and World Music/CRASHarts.

The Wallace Foundation is located in New York.
