BRIEF: Chicago's Ungaretti Harris merges with Boston law firm

Jan. 26--Chicago's Ungaretti Harris law firm will end 40 years of independence by merging with the larger Boston-based firm of Nixon Peabody.

The firms announced the combination Monday, which will be effective Feb. 1.

By adding Ungaretti's 100 lawyers, Nixon Peabody will significantly expand its minor Chicago presence, which it established in 2007. Nixon Peabody currently has 25 lawyers in Chicago, according to its website.

Tom Fahey, Ungaretti's managing partner, said in a statement that the merger will allow the firm to offer clients a more critical mass to handle complex litigation and transactions.

Nixon Peabody has more than 600 lawyers around the world, including offices in China and London.

The combined firm will retain the Nixon Peabody name.
