BRIEF: Chicago Reader editor leaving for L.A. Weekly

Jan. 20--Mara Shalhoup, editor-in-chief of the Chicago Reader since 2011, is leaving the alternative newspaper to become editor of L.A. Weekly.

Shalhoup will start her new position Feb. 16, according to an announcement posted Monday on the L.A. Weekly website. Her exit was confirmed by Jim Kirk, senior vice president of Sun-Times Media, which owns the Chicago Reader.

Kirk said Shalhoup's last day at the Chicago Reader will be Feb. 13 and that a search for her replacement is underway.

Launched in 1971 by a group of Carleton College graduates, the Reader carved its niche as a free weekly long on free-form journalism, entertainment news and offbeat want ads. The alternative paper struggled in the digital age as classifieds migrated online, and in 2009 it was acquired out of bankruptcy by Atalaya Capital Management, a New York-based hedge fund.

In 2012, Wrapports, parent of the Chicago Sun-Times, bought the Reader for a reported $3 million.
