BRIEF: Chicago police station evacuated after man brings in package containing tranquilizers

Nov. 09--A suspicious package, later determined to be harmless, was brought to a Northwest Side police district Monday by a man who said he received it in the mail a month ago, officials said.

The man entered the Shakespeare District station at 2150 N. California Ave. around 12:50 p.m. and handed over the package, according to police and Fire Cmdr. Frank Velez.

He told police he did not know who sent the package, which was a regular-sized letter envelope with white powder inside, according to police.

Officials later determined that the package contained crushed-up tranquilizers for humans, and people were allowed back into the station by 2 p.m.

Firefighters responded with a truck company, battalion chief, a fire engine, a hazardous team and an ambulance, Velez said.

About a half-dozen detectives and officers were evacuated as a precaution, but no injuries were reported, Velez said.

The police bomb squad also was called to the station.
