BRIEF: Chicago police officer hurt after hit by fleeing car

Jan. 14--A Chicago police officer was injured when he was struck by a car during a traffic stop early Thursday in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The officer stopped the car around 12:30 a.m. in the 7300 block of South Jeffery Boulevard and asked the driver to get out, said Officer Ron Gaines, a police spokesman.

Instead, the driver put the car in drive and hit the officer while trying to flee, Gaines said.

The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Gaines said.

No one was in custody, police said.
