BRIEF: Chicago-born musical 'October Sky' takes next big step

March 26--The Old Globe in San Diego announced Friday that it will open its 2016-17 season with "October Sky," the new musical that premiered at The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire in Aug. 2015. Based on the 1999 film of the same name inspired by Homer H. Hickam Jr.'s memoir "Rocket Boys," "October Sky" follows a group of small-town science students whose lives take off when they enter a rocketry competition.

Most notably, the West Coast premiere will add Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman to the book writing team with Aaron Thielen. The production again features music and lyrics by Michael Mahler and will be directed by Rachel Rockwell.

"October Sky," produced in association with Universal Stage Productions, runs Sept. 10 -- Oct. 23 at The Old Globe. The cast and full creative team of the production have yet to be announced.
