National Weather Service confirms tornado touched down in Lake Geneva

Aug. 19--The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado caused damage in the Lake Geneva area in southern Wisconsin.

Weather service staff surveyed the damage caused by Tuesday night's severe weather in Walworth County and determined a EF1 twister touched down.

The storms damaged a number of buildings in a small industrial park in the Town of Lyons. The tornado also left a trail of tree damage north of Lake Geneva.

No tornadoes were reported in the immediate Chicago area despite warnings in Will and DuPage counties.

Tornado warnings were issued for the two counties Tuesday evening as storms packing winds of 60 mph raked the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service. The storms produced small hail, frequent lightning and heavy downpours.

A flash flood warning was issued but canceled before midnight when the risk was determined to be low, the weather service said. About 14,000 Commonwealth Edison customers lost power.

Downstate, at least two tornado touchdowns were reported in Livingston County.

One touched down briefly near Cornell around 4:30 p.m. and another near Pontiac around 5 p.m. Staff from the National Weather Service planned to survey the area Wednesday to confirm the touchdowns.

Livingston County Emergency Management spokesperson Charles Schopp said there were no reports of injuries or damage.
