BRIEF: Chicago-area native Jake Johnson joins Tom Cruise movie

March 08--"New Girl" star Jake Johnson has joined the cast of the upcoming Tom Cruise reboot of "The Mummy," The Hollywood Reporter reported Tuesday.

Johnson, who grew up in Winnetka and Evanston, is set to play a member of the military in a role that was written specifically for him, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie, which is set in the modern day, is expected to begin filming next month in anticipation of a June 2017 release. "The Mummy" series starring Brendan Fraser was set in the early 20th century.

Johnson, who attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, appeared in last year's "Jurassic World" and the comedy "Joshy," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
