BRIEF: Charges pending against man who drove through fence at Chicago Harbor Lock

March 13--A man was taken into custody early Sunday after he drove his car through a fence at the Chicago Harbor Lock, police said.

About 4:50 a.m., the man drove his vehicle through a fence in the 100 block of North Streeter Drive. At some point, the man got out of his vehicle, and employees at the Chicago Lock instructed him over a loudspeaker to get back into his car, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago police spokesman.

Chicago police Marine Unit officers and members of the SWAT team, who responded to the scene for a call of trespassing, took the man into custody, Quaid said.

Earlier reports over police scanner traffic that the man fired shots, climbed a fence, then mounted a crane were incorrect, Quaid said.

The Chicago Harbor Lock is a transportation facility where about 200,000 tons of cargo and 50,000 vessels pass through annually, according to a Chicago Architecture website.

Charges were pending.
