BRIEF: Charges in July slaying of man whose son was killed days earlier

May 28--A 23-year-old man was ordered held without bail Thursday after he was charged with killing a man in July who had lost his 13-year-old son to a shooting days earlier.

Kortillious Gipson, of the 1100 block of North Kedvale Avenue, appeared before Judge Peggy Chiampas, where he was ordered held, said Cook County state's attorney spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Gipson is charged with the July 31 fatal shooting of Sam Walker, 34, of the 1200 block of North Harding Avenue. Walker, who was known by friends as "Boolord," was found shot several times in the 4100 block of West Crystal Street about 9 a.m. and died on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

Walker's 13-year-old son, also named Sam Walker, was killed July 25 near the intersection of Lexington Street and California Avenue, about 4 miles from where the elder Walker was fatally shot, officials said.

The boy, who was shot in the face, had been set to begin Manley Career Academy High School in the fall.

Police and friends of the Walkers said the father and son were both connected to gangs.
