March 19--About 200 people were evacuated Thursday morning at Chapman University in Orange after a suspicious package was found near a classroom building, officials said.
The evacuation order was lifted about four hours later after a bomb squad destroyed the package, officials said.
The package was later determined not to be a bomb or other explosive, said Mary Pratt, a university spokesman.
The package was found outside Waltmar Theatre and adjacent to Moulton Hall, near Palm Avenue and Grand Street, Pratt said. Authorities said they were summoned to the campus around 9 a.m.
About 200 people were evacuated from Moulton Hall, where arts and theater classes take place, Platt said.
Orange police and fire officials allowed the building to be reopened about 11 a.m., she said.
"Everything's safe now," Platt said.
A bomb squad from the Orange County Sheriff's Department destroyed the package but had not informed school officials what it contained, Platt said.
