Oct. 11--A runner in his 60s suffered an apparent heart attack along the route of the Chicago Marathon on Sunday morning on the North Side, but a Chicago Fire Department paramedic revived him, according to officials.
It happened about 9:40 a.m. at Lake Shore Drive and Melrose Street, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
"He was down, and we were on the scene first,'' Langford said.
A paramedic used an automatic external defibrillator, which restored his heart rhythm to normal and "got him back,'' Langford said.
A outside ambulance, Superior, took the man to Presence St. Joseph Hospital, where his condition had stabilized.
"He could have died,'' Langford said.
There were several other people taken to hospitals during the marathon, but their injuries were not serious.
