BRIEF: Celebrities react to the death of David Bowie

Jan. 11--Celebrities and even close relatives expressed shock and sorrow on social media over the passing of rock icon David Bowie early Monday morning.

The British singer and actor died at the age of 69, just days after releasing a critically acclaimed album on his birthday.

A statement posted to his official Facebook page said Bowie "died peacefully today surrounded by his family" and asked for privacy for his family during their time of grief.

Bowie's son Duncan Jones posted a picture of himself as a toddler perched on his father's shoulders on Twitter with a message confirming the news. "Very sorry and sad to say it's true," he wrote.

Tributes followed from stars as wide ranging as comedian Ricky Gervais, who wrapped up hosting the Golden Globe Awards earlier in the evening, to Kanye West.
