BRIEF: Caterpillar to lay off 475 workers

Aug. 25--Construction and mining equipment maker Caterpillar said on Tuesday that it will lay off about 475 people, including about 300 in the Peoria area.

In a statement, the company said it is consolidating several units within its customer services support division. Cuts will affect managers and support staff, among other positions.

"While we know today is a very difficult day for employees and their families in this division, we believe these are the right steps for Caterpillar's long-term success," Caterpillar spokeswoman Lisa Miller said in an email.

The company declined to say when the layoffs will be completed. "Some employees might not be impacted for several months," Miller said.
