Jan. 16--Caterpillar said it is considering a plant restructuring that could cost 230 production employees their jobs in Joliet. The work would move to Monterrey, Mexico.
Caterpillar said it expects to finalize the decision to move production of hydraulic components, including gear and engine oil pump and valves, by March.
The company added "it's becoming clear" that the Joliet facility isn't competitive.
Also, Caterpillar said it expects to consolidate foundry work at Mapleton, Ill., which would result in adding up to 200 jobs at that facility by the end of 2016.
The company said those jobs would come from closing its foundry in Toccoa, Ga., and its seals facility in Franklin, N.C., a decision that will affect 275 jobs.
