BRIEF: Carpentersville man dies of snow shoveling-related fall

Feb. 06--A Carpentersville man died this week after suffering injuries from a fall while he was shoveling snow early last month, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Rudy Onate, 75, of the 100 block of South Siesta Road in the northwest suburb, was pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m. Wednesday at the University of Illinois Medical Center, according to the office. He was injured Jan. 9, according to the office.

Onate died of cervical fractures with spinal cord compression in a fall, with diabetes and heart disease contributing factors, the medical examiner's office determined after an autopsy Thursday.

Onate was found in a driveway of a house on Siesta after neighbors noticed he had fallen while shoveling snow, according to the office. Onate originally was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin and then transferred to UIC Medical Center.

Onate's death is the 13th of snow shoveling-related causes that the medical examiner's office has been notified of since 6 p.m. Saturday, according to office spokesman Frank Shuftan.
